A young person with a mobility impairment may be hesitant to use a wheelchair because they’re worried about being judged by their peers. And in some cultures, there’s a negative perception of using assistive devices, which can prevent people from getting the help they need.

This stigma can also affect the way people interact with those who use assistive devices. Others may treat them differently, either with pity or as if they’re less capable. This can have a big impact on the self – esteem and social life of the device users.
